What is the difference between a custom home and a production home?

A production home is a home sold with a piece of property that is mass produced and repeatedly used throughout neighbourhoods. The size of the home and the floor plans are generally set while the only thing you customize are the finishes. A custom home is a uniquely tailored space designed specifically to meet your lifestyle requirements and built on property you have purchased.

 

Why are custom homes more expensive than production homes?

The expense of a custom home is based on a number of factors, including the total square footage; using specialized services like architects and designers; having a custom builder manage the project; the extent of the labour needed (trades); the different materials used; and the level of finishes that are chosen.

 
 

What is the cost per square foot to build a custom home?

The cost will vary depending on finishes but on average we see homes from $350/sf and upwards.

 

How long does it take to build a custom home?

If you already have a piece of property available to build on, the design and prep phase is about two to three months. (This includes creating the floor plans, exterior elevations, and construction drawings.) It takes another two to three months to receive a permit from the municipality that you’re building in. The actual construction phase is roughly eight months to one year, depending on the size of the home.
